''Mermaid''

Some time ago the U.S. government made an unusual statement about the existence of mermaids, the incident was motivated by a controversial documentary channel Discovery Channel that discusses the myth about them.

I had the opportunity to attend the program, displayed here in Brazil by Animal Planet. The documentary is based on information from 03 scientists who came into contact with a new species of animal in South Africa

After several tests, it appeared they had found an unknown species of primate water. If the information is true, I do not know! But the documentary can be very convincing.

The show not only addresses the assumption creature found to be a "mermaid" and how the South African government and American are covering up the evidence, it also revives a theory long forgotten, the Theory of aquatic primates. I admit that before the show I had never heard about it.

The first author of this theory was the German pathologist, Max Westenhöfer, reinforced by the work of British biologist Alister Hardy in 1960. They suggested that the ancestors of humans lived and began a phase semi-aquatic harvesting shellfish and other animals on the coast.

At this stage would hominids lost most of the body, increased fat layers on the skin and stayed with the upright posture. It is a theory rejected by the scientific world as well as one day, the elephants was considered absurd to have a semi-aquatic ancestor, something widely accepted today.

The theory of the primates water is defended by a few scientists, one of them is Elaine Morgan. I found a talk by Elaine where she exposes her point of view and explains some of the theory of aquatic apes, and to list facts that perhaps the motives for his work not being taken seriously.
