To dial – discar, ligar.
You should dial 911 for help whenever you have an emergency. [Você deve ligar para 911 sempre que tiver uma emergência.]

To answer / get the phone – atender o telefone
I’m kind of busy right now. Can you get the phone, please? [Estou meio ocupado agora. Você pode atender o telefone, por favor?]

Answering machine – secretária eletrônica
I called you and left a message on your answering machine. Did you get it? [Liguei e deixei um recado na sua secretária eletrônica. Você recebeu?]

To call someone back - ligar de volta, retornar a ligação
He was in a meeting and asked me to call him back. [Ele estava numa ligação e pediu para eu retornar a ligação.]

To hang up – desligar o telefone, colocar o telefone no gancho
To hang up on somebody – desligar o telefone na cara de alguém.
“Don’t hang up, please”, said the operator. ["Não desligue, por favor", disse a telefonista.]
Can you believe he hung up on me? [Acredita que ele desligou na minha cara?]

To get cut off - (a ligação) cair
She was telling me about college when we got cut off. [Ela estava me contando sobre a faculdade quando a ligação caiu.]

Long distance call - interurbano

Cell phone (EUA) / Mobile (Eng.) – telefone celular

Speakerphone - viva-voz
I’ll put you on speakerphone so everyone can hear you. [Vou colocar você no viva-voz para todos lhe ouvirem.]

To text - mandar mensagem de texto, SMS
Text me when you arrive. [Me manda SMS quando você chegar.]

Voice mail - caixa-postal
I tried calling several times but I only got voice mail. [Tentei ligar para ele várias vezes mas só deu caixa-postal.
